I think it is better to start with a photography school. It will help you in better understanding the fundamentals. Later, you can assist a photographer to get into photography full-time.August 13, 2012 at 7:59 pm #13391
There are a ton of great video’s out there to help get you started. One series I watched multiple times when I started out was The Art of Photography with Ted Forbes (http://theartofphotography.tv/episodes/).
There are also an absolute bucket load of video’s on youtube.
If reading is more your thing then try The Bastard Book of Photography (http://photography.bastardsbook.com/) – it’s not an actually book, but whatever. It’s another great resource.
Once you have a grasp over ISO/Aperture/Shutter then, frankly, no matter how much you read or however many videos you watch, you will always take poor photographs unless you GET OUT WITH YOUR CAMERA AND PRACTICE!August 13, 2012 at 11:02 pm #13394
In addition to Jamie’s response, try and study the work of other great photographers. If you are really looking for some handholding or a good introduction in the field try Lynda’s Foundations of Photography: Composition. Then you’d have enough information to decide where to look for further.
