At first I was reluctant to use my 50mm because the thought of not being able to zoom the lens made me panic.
Now I shoot almost entirely with primes and absolutely love them. Clients and friends are blown away by the quality that they produce.
I find them invaluable for all the reasons you have discussed.

It wasn't until after I bought my 50mm prime lens that I found out how cool a lens like this could really be. In fact the five points written above were the exact same things I discovered and really appreciate about this lens.

I'm a natural light enthusiast and prefer to use natural light for things like portraits. My 50mm prime lens allows me to shoot in all kinds of lighting situations without ever having to worry about carrying a flash. And being able to shoot all the way down to f/1.8 means I can always ...

* shoot in very low light
* create excellent bokeh
* blow images out for a high key effect
* get extremely shallow depth of field

But the greatest thing about a 50mm prime lens is you get all those benefits but at a price that's really dirt cheap.

Thanks to APN for providing this great article on primes vs zooms. I totally agree and practice what it preaches (unless I'm just "happy snapping"). I think the point about being more thoughtful about composing is the key to enhancing one's photographic skills.

Comment for Jonathon: As it turns out, Mr. Bresson favored a 50mm lens in most of his work (at least with his Leica rangefinder). Check out the link below.
