[...] For certain scenes the smart camera is really dumb. For example, for an evening scene the camera will automatically set the exposure so that the shot is well illuminated. This results in a scene which looks similar to shot on a bright cloudy day – no harsh light but still so much that it doesn’t look like the evening any more. Setting the exposure compensation to -1 or -2 will help you bring down the exposure level to portray the scene correctly. Also see how you can portray weather and various levels of light.
Bracketing might work OK, but don't forget about the exposure compensation, wich gives you +/- 2EV, that is enough for most of the situations. Doing it in full manual control can be realy tricky and, absolutely true, you need to be experienced. In fact, if +/- 2EV are not enough, you can read what the camera thinks in A mode or S mode (the aperture/shutter speed combination), than go to full manual mode and make the compensation as many EV as you want, where you want (aperture, shutter speed or ISO). For low key you can even use an ND filter. You can try everything and create, in the end, your own style !
