Soft Focus Filter?

I was reading the tips for shooting the portraits and I came across the idea of using the soft focus filter. But what I don’t understand it why do we actually need a soft focus filter when we can render soft focus by shooting at aperture priority mode at lower f-numbers.

How does soft focus filter help?
